City Scrip Issued in the 1850s
Type 1 Payable when funds in Treasury
In 1853 Chattanooga Alderman Dr. Joseph S. Gillespie suggested an interest
bearing scrip which was traded until 1859 when the ordinance was repealed.
The scrip was basically a sound financial measure to allow payment of
expenses over the tax year until city taxes were paid.
The interest bearing scrip was signed by the first treasure(1852) of
Chattanooga, John A. Hooke. He also served as Justice of Peace.
