Large Size Notes
Notes printed between March 3, 1917 and March 14, 1924 have a geographic
letter to make it easier to sort the notes by region and bank. Chattanooga
notes have the letter S for the Southern region. Notes printed prior to
September 1925 have a treasury number printed in the upper right and a
bank serial number in the lower left. Prior to 1908 and after 1915 the
national bank notes were secured by United States bonds. Between these
years other securities were also used to back the notes to allow expansion
of the money supply. Prior to the 1908 the security clause on the notes
read "Secured by United States bonds deposited with the Treasury". New
plates had to be issued for all banks to change the clause to "Secured
by bonds or other securities". When the law changed back in 1915 the old
plates with that indicated the notes were secured with other securities
continued to be used thought the change over to plain back notes to avoid
remaking the plates until there were worn out. As result, there are plain
back notes with each security clause. There are also Plain Back Notes
with and without the treasury number and the geographic letter from the
Hamilton National Bank of Chattanooga.
