The check below has a special story, written in the Chattanooga
Story by John Wilson, pp 205. A stonemason named Mike Finnigan was given
the contract for building a stone wall around the courthouse square. He
secured J.J. Sullivan as surety for the job. However, Finnigan "went crazy"
and Sullivan was left to compete the work. He did so, and the courthouse
wall that was built was greatly admired. However, Finnigan had greatly
underbid on the job, and Sullivan lost money on the project. He sued to
try to make a profit, but the court denied the claim.
