John C. Stanton's Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad Company issued scrip
in 1869, initially for workers' meal tickets and later for paying workers.
The National Bank Note Company in New York printed the high quality
scrip in denominations of 20, 25 and 33 cents. The scrip was hand signed
by the AL & Chattanooga Railroad Company Local Treasure, H. E. Waite.
The vignettes are in black print. The reverse of all three denominations
is identical. They indicate that it is redeemable by the local treasure
on payday.
In 1870 when the AL & Chattanooga timetable was issued in the Official
Guide of Railways 1870 the railway was operating from Chattanooga to
Asheville Station (Ashville current town name). Ashville is about 53 miles
northeast of Burmingham. |
