Souder's Cheap Store
The advertisment at the right is from the July 2, 1878 of the Chattanooga
Daily Times newspaper. The advertisment was from front page in upper right
on the first day Adolph Ochs was publisher. Adoph Ochs purchased
the New York Times in 1896.
Note the comment about City leaders
confiscating the baloon.

Henry H. Souder's Cheap Store note is similar to the $ 5 U.S. large size
Demand Note note of 1861. It advertises bargains in simple and fancy goods
at 211 Market St. in Chattanooga at the sign of the balloon from 1873
to 1879. This type of advertising note from the south is very scarce.

Sterchi's Furnature Store
The front of this advertising note is a replica of the $10 Confederate
States of America of September 2, 1861. The center vignette is a wagon
load of cotton bales and corn gathers at right. It has a bust of John
E. Ward, a Savannah GA bank director prior to the war, at the left.
The back promices $10 off any $100 or 10% discount on any cash purchase
at Sterchi Bros Furnature Co. at 621 Market St. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
