$1, $2 & $3 Notes of January 4, 1863
The Fall of Chattanooga Notes
These notes were issued a few months before General Rosecrans, commanding
the Union's Army of the Cumberland, divided his army and prepared to surrounded
Chattanooga. General Bragg saw the danger and withdrew from the important
railroad center and supply depot to a stronger position in Northern Georgia.
He planned to attack the Union army piecemeal to destroy it.
High quality paper and improved engraving was used on the $1, $2 and
$3 notes of January 4, 1863 printed by Keatinge & Ball of Columbia, S.C.
This printer, founded in 1861, did the engraving and design work for almost
all of the Confederate States of America notes starting with the December
2, 1862 issue. Varieties of these types have either W. C McClure or the
cashier's signature
printed or hand signed. The printed signature is black and the hand signed
signature is brown/black. The ink from a hand signed usually bleeds through
the note and can be seen on the back. Other varieties do not have "State
of Tennessee".
$1 Notes
There are three varieties of the $1 notes. All three notes are dominated
by the period train vignette and the mechanic at the lower right. The first
variety, G-58 has a printed cashier signature, W. C McClure's signature
is hand signed. Variety two, G-59, has the reverse signatures printed / hand
signed. Looking at the back to see which signature has bled through will
often identify the hand signed signature. Also the hand signed signature
will be more brown than the black printed signature. The third variety, G-60,
is scarce (R-11 = 16-20 known) does not have "State of Tennessee" in the
top right corner.
